- Location: Birbeck College, University of London, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HX, United Kingdom
- Dates: Friday 5 – Sunday 7 April 2019
Your Trainer Jos van Boxtel
Your trainer on this course is Jos van Boxtel, an internationally recognised hypnotherapist and trainer of Ericksonian Hypnotherapy and NLP. Jos has an established practice and training institute in the Netherlands, integrating hypnotherapy with approaches like EMDR, NLP, Solution Focused Therapy and Neurosemantics. He specialises in treating phobias.
Jos has studied NLP in the US and Ericksonian Hypnotherapy in Germany and the UK. Jos has modelled the work of Stephen Brooks, the founder of the BHRTI, in considerable depth and is a leading authority on his approach to hypnotherapy. He is also author of the first of a series of Ericksonian Guides to be published in 2019. The first specialising in phobias.
What You Will Get
In association with the Ericksonian Guides Series of books about Ericksonian techniques for treating common problems with hypnotherapy, this course develops further the techniques, skills and language patterns from the book ‘Stephen Brooks and the Art of Ericksonian Hypnotherapy – Phobias’ written by trainer Jos van Boxtel.
BHRTI offers this three day CPD Master Class as a hands-on training, giving you the knowledge, understanding and experience to use Ericksonian techniques with people who suffer from a wide range of phobias.
What You Will Learn
On this course, you will learn everything you need to know about phobias and how to resolve them quickly and effectively. You will explore various aspects of phobias including internal representations, cause, secondary gain, limiting beliefs and social systems.
To address these factors we will use various elements of Ericksonian hypnosis, solution-focused therapy, NLP and EMDR. Rather than applying a standard technique or procedure, you will learn how to adapt therapy to a client’s beliefs, needs and thinking style.
This course is based on the original teaching of the world renowned expert in the field of compassionate Ericksonian hypnotherapy Stephen Brooks as modelled by Jos van Boxtel and has been created due to an increasing demand by therapists wanting to become more competent and confident in treating clients more effectively.
This course has a unique concept of multi-level learning; acquiring principles, concepts and structures at the conscious level while developing intuitions, experiences, and creative strategies at the unconscious level. The three days will include:
- An overview of theoretical aspects of phobias
- Live demonstrations in front of the group
- Video excerpts of hypnotherapy pioneer Stephen Brooks breaking down his techniques and skills
- Short and playful exercises to practice specific skills
- Structured exercises to practice specific therapeutic techniques
- Integrative exercises to practice a full phobia treatment session
As you are no doubt aware, many people suffer from specific phobias, but you might be surprised to learn just how many. In the United States, about 26 million have a phobia of a certain object, an animal or situation and many of them are multi-phobic.
Although phobias are common, the effect on a person’s life can be far-reaching and debilitating. People who have a phobia often suffer from great anxiety, avoid important events, places or activities and base major life decisions on their phobia.
Curing a phobia not only removes an intense fear; it allows the person to live according to his or her goals, dreams and life purpose.
Days one and two are dedicated to treating specific phobias with day three dedicated to treating social phobia. People who suffer from social phobia are afraid they will look weak, crazy, stupid, boring or even ugly in the eyes of others. They can have symptoms like blushing, sweating, trembling or stuttering and are often caught in a vicious cycle of fearing their symptoms and thereby causing them to happen.
People with social phobia usually end up avoiding situations, people, or activities that trigger their fears, thereby limiting their lives both professionally and personally. We’ll explore the fundamental difference between a social phobia and a specific phobia, both in nature and in treatment.
Comparison With Standard Treatment
Often phobia clients are treated with CBT, which involves exposure and systematic desensitisation. Such a treatment can be effective, but it is long-term so carries the risk of people giving up prematurely. Sadly some people don’t even consider therapy that involves exposure, due to a fear that they cannot handle it.
An alternative treatment is the NLP technique known as the fast phobia cure which can provide resolution without exposure. This technique is often effective, but sometimes it is not enough, especially for phobias which are long-term, involve multiple situations or objects, or are the result of severe trauma.
Qualification and CPD Credits
This course awards participants with a Master Class Certificate in Treating Phobias and is recognised by the General Hypnotherapy Register for CPD Credits.
Who Should Attend
